A Genealogical History of the Poole, Langston, Mason Families and Kindred Lines Of Upper South Carolina as Chronicled by Bessie Poole Lamb, Enoree, S. C. Assisted by Mary-Mack Poole Ezell, Deland Fla.

Notes & Possible Errata

The following are notes on items in the Lamb and Ezell book that seem at odds with other primary evidence.

"Seth Poole's Descendants...(2) William married a Terry, his first cousin. He died October 15, 1842".

Laurens County Probate Court, "Laurens County Ordinary/Probate Judge Index to Estate Papers 1800-1939" Box 56 Pkg 12 appear to be this William Pool. The Probate is dated 1822.

"Nancy Caroline, third child of Peter Pool, married Johnson Newman. They lived in Spartanburg County..."

An Account of Marriages Solemnized by Tolaver Robertson in South Carolina between October 1842 & February 1867, edited by Joseph R. Gainey 1985 A Press, Greenville, SC has the entry: "The names from this to the end of the book I married before I made a record... Johnson Newman and Emily Pool" p. 12.

The 1850 Census has an Emily Newman, age 31 and a Joseph Newman living in Spartanburg, SC.

"Berry's eleven children were (3) William, (Nov. 21, 1821-Oct. 15, 1832)..."

William's grave marker in the newly re-discovered Pool family cemetery confirms that he died October 15th, 1842. In addition, two court cases in the Laurens County Court of Common Pleas show that William died in 1842. And on page 23 Lamb & Ezell state that William was 21 at his death, which would be 1842.

Berry Poole's Descendants... Elizabeth Poole Rose. (3) Elizabeth, known as Betsy, eloped with William Rose... She died early in life.

Lamb & Ezell give her birth year as 1824. A recently published genealogy of the Rose family states that she was born 8 June 1823 and died 15 May 1891. The Census records support the latter version, as does her gravestone in the Clinton City Cemetery, Clinton, SC.

The Tree Climber, Laurens District Chapter South Carolina Genealogical Society, Volume 25, No. 4, p. 41. The information source is given as William Rose's Bible.

George Pool and His Descendants... "George married ... Fannie Farrow (Aug. 19, 1838-Aug. 31, 1885...".

Mary Farrow's tombstone at Langston Baptist Church cemetery has her birth date as August 22, 1836.

George Pool and His Descendants..."Their children were: (4) Thomas Pitts (Jan. 29, 1861- March 26, 1926); (4) Harvey (Aug. 19, 1858); (4) Ora, (March 24, 1868- 1896); Luke."

In the Lamb & Ezell account, "Ora" is a female who married John Powers, so she is probably the "Mary L" of the 1870 and 1880 Census. The 1900 Federal Census records a John H. Powers with children Roy P. (age 8) and Mary L. (age 2). Lamb says that "Ora" had a son Roy Poole Powers.

The 1880 Census records a child named "Farrow". No record exists for a "Luke". I suspect that Luke and Farrow may be the same person
